One Shared Vision: Building Hartsburg’s Future Together
Celebrating 155 Years Together
As the excitement from Hartsburg’s 155th Anniversary begins to settle, I want to take a moment to thank everyone who helped make the weekend such a memorable celebration.
Seeing neighbors, families, former residents, and visitors come together reminded us exactly what makes Hartsburg such a special place to call home. Whether you volunteered, sponsored an event, attended the festivities, or simply enjoyed spending time with friends and neighbors, thank you for helping make our celebration such a success.
A heartfelt thank you goes to the many volunteers, organizers, businesses, sponsors, and community members who dedicated countless hours behind the scenes. Your generosity and commitment continue to prove that Hartsburg truly is a Small Town with a Big Heart.
While Founders Day gave us an opportunity to celebrate our past, it also reminded us how bright our future can be when a community comes together with a shared vision.
Your Voice Is Helping Shape Hartsburg’s Future
Before sharing these exciting updates, I want to sincerely thank everyone who participated in our recent Community Grant Survey.
Your feedback is already making a difference.
The survey confirmed what many residents have been telling us for years—that our community values parks, safe places to walk, recreational opportunities, family gathering spaces, beautification, and continued investment in Hartsburg.
Those priorities are now helping strengthen grant applications, guide future planning, and ensure we’re pursuing projects that reflect what matters most to our residents.
Every completed survey has helped move these projects one step closer to becoming reality.
Investing in Recreation & Quality of Life
One of the strongest messages we heard from residents was the desire for more recreation opportunities and gathering spaces.
Thanks to a $25,000 Woods Foundation Grant, we’re excited to begin the first phase of the Hartsburg Community Park Initiative.
The first phase will include:
✔ Multi-sport Basketball & Pickleball Court
✔ Pavilion
✔ Picnic Tables
✔ Community Gathering Space
This project is designed to create a place where children can play, families can gather, neighbors can connect, and community events can continue to grow for generations to come.

Concept rendering only. Final layout and amenities may change as additional funding becomes available.
And yes…we’ve heard all the questions about the telephone booth!
Once additional funding is secured, we plan to install a vintage-style telephone booth that will be transformed into a community book exchange. It’s a unique feature that reflects Hartsburg’s character while creating another destination for residents and visitors alike.
Investing in Safer Streets
Creating a safer community remains a priority.
Thanks to a $2,500 AARP Community Challenge Grant, we’ll continue making improvements along Front Street aimed at reducing speeding traffic and improving pedestrian safety.
Recent improvements already completed include:
✔ New Speed Limit Signs
✔ “Stop Ahead” Warning Signs
Additional traffic-calming measures are currently being researched in partnership with Logan County and other agencies as we continue looking for long-term solutions.
Preserving Our History
Our community’s history is one of our greatest assets.
That’s why we’re excited to announce a $2,500 Logan County Tourism Grant to restore Hartsburg’s historic jail cell.
Even more exciting, the Hartsburg Founders Day Committee has committed to matching the grant dollar-for-dollar, allowing this project to move forward even sooner.
Coming Soon to Second Street!

Concept rendering only. Final layout and amenities may change as additional funding becomes available.
Once completed, the restored jail cell will become another destination that celebrates our history while encouraging visitors to stop, explore, and experience everything Hartsburg has to offer.
Investing in Village Services
Behind every successful community are the facilities and equipment that keep essential services running.
Two grants will help us make significant improvements:
Rebuild Illinois Grant — $45,000
Funding has been awarded for construction of a new Village maintenance facility. Replacing the aging maintenance shed will better protect Village equipment, improve efficiency, and safeguard taxpayer investments.
Viper Mine Community Grant — $50,000
Funding will also allow us to preserve and update Village Hall—one of Hartsburg’s most important gathering places.
Improvements will make Village Hall more functional, welcoming, accessible, and ready to serve residents for years to come.
A portion of these funds will also support additional maintenance facility improvements.
Community Partnerships Make Great Things Happen
One thing continues to stand out throughout every project we’ve pursued:
Great things happen when a community works together.
A wonderful example is Orvil Township’s generous contribution toward replacing the handicap-accessible ramp at Village Hall.
Their partnership helps ensure Village Hall remains welcoming and accessible for everyone.
Likewise, we’re grateful for the support of the Founders Day Committee, local organizations, businesses, volunteers, residents, and every grant partner who has chosen to invest in Hartsburg.
Every project highlighted here reflects a community working together toward a common goal.
Looking Ahead
While we’ve accomplished a great deal, we’re just getting started.
Planning is already underway for the next phase of improvements designed to make Hartsburg an even better place to live, work, and visit.
On the Horizon
🚰 Water infrastructure improvements and technology upgrades
🚶 Sidewalk improvements
🌳 Expanded walking trail opportunities
🏀 Additional phases of the Community Park Initiative
🌼 Community beautification projects
💡 Future grant opportunities driven by resident feedback
Your ideas continue to shape these priorities, and your participation helps us pursue funding that turns ideas into reality.
Thank You, Hartsburg
Every grant we’ve secured, every improvement we’ve completed, and every project we’re planning has one purpose—to continue building a stronger Hartsburg for everyone who calls it home.
None of this happens without the support of our residents, volunteers, businesses, community organizations, and local partners. Your ideas, encouragement, and willingness to get involved continue to move our Village forward.
The momentum we’re building today is about much more than projects. It’s about investing in our future while preserving the values that have made Hartsburg special for 155 years.
Together, we’re creating a community that honors its past, celebrates its present, and confidently embraces its future.
Thank you for believing in Hartsburg, for supporting your neighbors, and for helping make our community a place we’re all proud to call home.
It is truly an honor to serve as your Mayor, and I look forward to continuing the work of building an even brighter future together.
With gratitude,
Darien Ritterbush
Mayor, Village of Hartsburg
